What’s the Vibe Like at Sonora? A Mexican Experience Rooted in Australia

Tucked into the leafy heart of Potts Point, Sonora isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a feeling. A slow inhale of woodsmoke and lime and native botanicals, the warm clink of copitas raised in good company. From the moment you walk through the door, Sonora invites you into a sensory experience that’s both grounding and quietly luxurious.

Garden-to-Table Warmth

At Sonora, we let the ingredients lead the way—many of them grown just steps from the kitchen. Our garden isn’t just a source of flavour, it’s a design principle. Edible natives, succulents, and fast-growing greens wind their way through the space, softening the walls and offering a subtle signal: you’re in for something real.

We work closely with trusted growers like True Blue Organics and source seafood from one of the best stalls at the Potts Point Saturday Market, just blocks from our door.

Understated Luxury

Forget the clichés of sombreros and loud colours. Sonora’s take on Mexican is refined, modern, and quietly confident. Think warm wood, stone, soft lighting, and earthy textures. We hand-press our tortillas to order and serve dishes that honour tradition while embracing bold reinterpretation—like tamarind lamb barbacoa or smoked corn custard with macadamia.

Unhurried, Intimate, Alive

Whether you’re here for a long dinner with friends or a solo sip at the bar, the rhythm at Sonora is intentionally slow. It’s a place where the food arrives when it’s ready, and the mezcal is poured into hand-warmed copitas—meant to be sipped, savoured, and shared.

Have a special bottle at home? We don’t typically do BYO—but if your cellar’s something special, we’d love to hear about it. Learn more about our wine and drinks policy.

Our staff aren’t just servers; they’re storytellers—ready to talk about the garden, the chiles, or that perfect pairing for your next celebration.

Local Soul, Global Spirit

We’re inspired by Mexico, but we live in Sydney. So Sonora is built on that meeting point—where local seafood, Australian bush foods, and forgotten cuts of meat get the same reverence as imported spices and traditional techniques.

The result? A dining experience that feels fresh, rooted, and unmistakably ours.

At Sonora, we serve more than food—we serve moments worth remembering.

👨‍🍳 A Note from Chef Roy McVeigh:
“I’ve spent years cooking in restaurants around the world, but Sonora is something deeply personal. It’s where I get to blend the flavours I love with the ingredients I believe in—grown by people I trust, right here in Sydney. Every dish is an invitation to slow down and savour what’s in front of you.”
