The Hidden Heart of Potts Point: A Love Letter to the Community Gardens

Tucked just a few minutes from Sonora in Potts Point is one of my favourite places in Sydney: the Potts Point Community Gardens — a green pocket of rare plants, passionate growers, and the kind of knowledge you just can’t find online.

These gardens aren’t just patches of soil and greenery — they’re a thriving little ecosystem. Every visit feels like a slow conversation with nature — and with the remarkable people who care for it. The folks running the gardens are incredibly generous with their time and wisdom. They’ve introduced me to plants I never thought I’d come across in Australia, let alone in an inner-city garden.

What I love most are the chats — about the parts of plants you didn’t know were edible. Tomato leaves, fig stems, the tendrils of young squash — all the things we usually throw away. If you’re into zero-waste cooking or just curious about how to use a whole plant, this place is heaven.

These conversations have shaped the way we cook at Sonora. Our garden-to-table philosophy is rooted in sustainability, but also in curiosity — the desire to ask “what if?” when most people just discard something. A lot of the unexpected flavours on our menu start life here, just a few blocks from the restaurant.

So if you’re up early on a Saturday, stop by. Ask a question. Trade some seeds. You’ll be surprised by what’s growing under your nose.

And if you’re ever dining with us and wondering why something tastes just a little bit wild or unfamiliar — chances are it started life at the community garden, not far from your table.
