Gluten-Free by Nature: Why Modern Mexican Food is a Great Choice at Sonora
At Sonora Potts Point, we serve modern Mexican cuisine — inspired by tradition, elevated by technique, and designed for today’s tastes and dietary needs. One of the things we’re most proud of? Much of our menu is naturally gluten-free.
Corn, Not Wheat: A Staple of Mexican Cooking
In traditional Mexican cuisine, corn has always taken centre stage. Corn tortillas, masa, tamales, and tostadas form the backbone of countless dishes across Mexico. While flour tortillas are common in Tex-Mex and border regions, especially in northern Mexico and the southern U.S., they’re not the default in most of the country.
Want to learn more about the difference? This article by Eater offers a great history of corn vs. flour tortillas.
We stay true to this tradition at Sonora by using corn tortillas and masa-based elements in many of our dishes — but with a modern twist.
Most of Our Menu is Gluten-Free — But Always Tell Us
Our menu has been thoughtfully designed to be mostly gluten-free, without compromising on creativity or flavour. However, because we’re a scratch kitchen and use shared equipment, we always ask guests with gluten sensitivity or allergies to let their waiter know. This helps us take extra precautions and provide the safest dining experience possible.
Even when ingredients are naturally gluten-free, cross-contact can occur, so it’s essential that we’re aware of any dietary restrictions in advance.

Modern Mexican, Mindfully Made
Whether you’re gluten-free by choice or necessity, Sonora is a place where you can enjoy bold flavours, creative presentations, and genuine hospitality — all while feeling confident in your choices.
We’re proud to bring a modern Mexican experience to Potts Point that respects tradition while meeting today’s expectations. Come in, enjoy something different, and let us take care of the details — just don’t forget to let your waiter know about any allergies.
